A grand ol’ weekend

Posted by

Last night, Rachel and I went to Las Velas for a Burgh Mom meetup.  We finally got to meet, in real life, some of the people we talk with and follow online via Twitter and blogging.  We had a great time, and loved the food.  If you have a chance to eat at Las Velas, in Market Square, downtown Pittsburgh, please go – the food was great.  Thanks to everyone for coming out!

Today, we went clothes shopping for the whole family…well, not Zach.  He already has enough clothes for right now.  But, we got Abby some wonderful new outfits, some great shirts for Rachel, and a few shirts for me, too.  It was a shopping success, and we all had a great time.  It’s great to do things as a family when everyone is in a great mood and having fun!  We went to Steak & Shake for lunch and enjoyed some good food.

Once home, Abby got into bed for a nap, with a promise from Mommy that she could watch Cinderella when she got up.  We don’t have that movie, so I ran to the local Family Video to rent it.  Unfortunately, we got about 25 minutes into it, and it wouldn’t play anymore, even with various tricks that usually help.  We tried on three different DVD players (which includes a computer) and it just wouldn’t work.  Looks like someone tried to buff it with a t-shirt, as it had swirl marks all over.  Abby shifted gears really well, and opted for Peter Pan instead.  While she was watching, I made some Loaded Potato Soup, which turned out to be excellent.

And tomorrow, my brother and his wife & kids and my parents are coming over to enjoy the Steelers game and let the kids play.  We’ll probably be enjoying some chili and potato soup as well as various snacks.  What a great weekend in October!

Rachel & Zach

Grandma, Great Grandma, and coffee cake

Posted by

Great Grandma (my grandmother) and Grandma (my mom) visited us this evening. GG lives in Arizona and has been in Pittsburgh for a few weeks visiting family. She is heading back to AZ on Wednesday, and she wanted to see the kids again, so my mom brought her over to spend an hour or so with us before the kids went to sleep. In preparation for this, I whipped up a coffee cake using a yellow cake mix I had in the cupboard and some cinnamon & sugar.  It was quite a hit; everyone loved it.  I’m really glad I had the makings for it handy. (Granted, I only had two eggs, and no pudding mix that would work, but the cake mix already had pudding in it, so I just used a little water to substitute for the missing eggs, and a tablespoon or so of flour to add to the texture. See the recipe I linked for more info.)

Abby was very glad to see both Grandma and Great Grandma, and gave a lot of hugs and kisses tonight, all on her own initiative.  Zach was tired and zonked out just before they got here, but he woke up later and was very pleasant, even letting GG hold him for a bit.  We took some pictures for posterity.  Grandma was nice enough to take some pictures so that Rachel and I could be in a few, too.

It was a great evening, and I only wish we all had more time together.

Zach at 3 months

Posted by

Zach is growing so quickly. I can’t believe he is 3 months old already. It really feels like just yesterday we were in the hospital with him. He has changed so much already in 3 months. Here is the update.

Zach can now hold his head up all the way when he is on his belly and doesn’t need his head supported when on our shoulders or being sat up. He can also grab toys and bring them to his mouth. Time to start watching where we lay him and what is around him. We have to be careful that Abby isn’t putting her fingers in his mouth or any of her toys. She loves to touch his face and is always trying to put her fingers in his mouth, probably because whenever she puts her hands near his face his mouth opens. Too much of a temptation.  He is also very vocal. He loves to coo and the daycare says he talks to them all day long. He is such a happy baby that is very laid back.

Another Beautiful Sunday at South Park

Posted by

It was another wonderful Sunday we just had to take advantage of. We packed up a picnic lunch and headed over to South Park for the day.

We started off the day with going on the slides and the swings. Abby always loves doing that. We even went on a big slide that Abby had never been on before. She loved it!

We then tried to have our picnic lunch. We went over to the picnic benches and started to set everything up. We got Abby all set up with her lunch when the wasps showed up. The most unwanted thing at your picnic: 4 yellow jackets swarming around your 3 year old daughter’s jelly sandwich. Ugh! We packed everything back up while shooing the yellow jackets away from our kids. We then tried going to the other side of the playground to another picnic bench. The annoying things just followed us. We decided to eat in our car. Not exactly what we intended, but it worked. We cooled down a bit with the A/C on and just relaxed away from the pests.

When we were done eating, I asked Abby if she wanted to go ride her bike. Abby then said, “My bike is far away at home.” I told her that Daddy had packed her bike in the car. She said, “And my helmet?” with a huge smile on her face. We said yup. We got her bike out and went over to the section of the park where it was flat and you could ride your bike. There were several other kids there with their bikes too.  Abby did so great. She was steering and making the bike go where she wanted. She even peddled fast and slow. It was wonderful to watch her grow and learn. She had so much fun. She was on her bike for almost an hour non-stop. I’m so glad we got that for her for her birthday.

The last thing we did at South Park was try and fly a kite. We had bought a kite at Kitty Hawk Kites, OBX. It is a blue butterfly. The wind was not cooperating. There were times we thought we could get it up and going and then the wind would die down. We are definitely going to go back another day when it is windier and try and fly the kite.
